Intensive confinement: Battery cages

A view from inside one of the sheds at Wegmans' Egg Farm in Wolcott, New York. Over 700,000 hens spend their entire lives in these sheds, confined to wire "battery cages" so restrictive the birds don't even have enough space to spread their wings.

This photo was taken from video footage of an investigation of the Wegmans Egg Farm conducted by Compassionate Consumers in the summer of 2004.
