Ask Wegmans to phase out battery cages!

Along with the Humane Society of the U.S. we're asking Danny Wegman to phase out the cruel “battery” cages used at his 750,000-hen egg farm. A company that claims to be an industry leader in animal welfare shouldn't be inflicting unnecessary cruelty. Other large grocery chains have already phased out battery-cage eggs. Why can't Wegmans?

Please add your voice: We'll print out your signatures and deliver them to Wegmans headquarters in Rochester, New York.

To: Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

As a Wegmans customer, I urge you to stop selling eggs from battery caged hens. Battery cages are simply too cruel for any socially responsible company to support. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

2008-05-15Veronica VanGordonEndicott, NYWegmans Johnson CityI was sickened by the living conditions I have seen the hens owned by your company live in. I debate whether I will be back to shop knowing that a store such as Wegmans could support such atrocities. Please support cage free hens...I would be willing to pay more if assured that the hens had decent living conditions.
2008-05-13Ryan StotzBrockport, NYWegmans BrockportThere is no reason to continue the use of battery cages. You have even lied about the conditions the hens are in. It's cruel and should be stopped.

When I hear that you have, I will resume shopping at your store, until then I will boycott. I am also going to share this information with family and many friends and colleagues that shop at Wegmans. I believe you can and will do this because I believe your corporation is aspires to a high moral code and ethics and will do what it takes to rectify this.
2008-04-06Sarah FechtCicero, nyWegmans CiceroNot only is this practice cruel to animals, it cannot be healthy to eat the eggs of such unhealthy chickens.I am appalled.
2008-04-04Shawn CareyRochester, NYWegmans PittsfordEveryone is aware that living creatures are sacrificed in the name of human consumption, but the fate of farm animals does not excuse or justify sentencing them a pitiful existence as egg (or meat) producing "plants". As a progressive company, I urge you to exert your influence over suppliers. You have the power to make yourself a shining example of humanity and compassion in this increasingly brutal age. Removing foie gras from your menu would also go a long way towards showing that you're taking a stand against cruel farm industry practices.

I love how socially responsible your company is and that is the main reason that I do my shopping at your stores. I just hope that you will determine that the use of battery cages is not in agreement with your company vision.
2008-03-24Jillian HendersonWegmans Cherry HillHow would you like it if your family were put in cages.
2008-03-22Ben BradfordBattery cages are one of the most cruel forms of animal brutality today. Hens are forced to spend their whole life in tiny, cramped areas. Their legs and internal organs fail due to overfeeding. I am sure you are aware of the horrors of battery cages. Please act respnsibly and morally and stop selling eggs produced in battery cage farms. Thank you.
