Ask Wegmans to phase out battery cages!

Along with the Humane Society of the U.S. we're asking Danny Wegman to stop selling eggs from cruel “battery” cages. A company that claims to be an industry leader in animal welfare shouldn't be inflicting unnecessary cruelty. Other large grocery chains have already phased out battery-cage eggs. Why can't Wegmans?

Please add your voice: We'll print out your signatures and deliver them to Wegmans headquarters in Rochester, New York.

To: Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

As a Wegmans customer, I urge you to stop selling eggs from battery caged hens. Battery cages are simply too cruel for any socially responsible company to support. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

2010-08-17Privaterochester, NYWegmans Mt ReadLet me start by saying I am not a vegetarian that feels the need to convert people to be vegetarians. I believe animals have rights like we have rights. I understand there must be production in order to feed americans but we do not need to treat the animals (who give up there lives to feed us) with cruelty. There is unnecessary cruelty happening to those animals. Isn't enough that we must slaughter these animals so we can eat. After learning what has been going on during the production of food I am turning to organic foods and find meat suppliers that do not treat there animals with such cruelty. I am shocked that Wegmans condones this type of behavior. I have always consider Wegmans a top company for there employees. I have always assumed they would give the animals the same respect. I have always been a big fan of Wegmans quality of food. I do not shop anywhere else. If Wegmans would take a stand against cruelty to animals Wegmans would come out on top in the public eyes.
2010-08-10PrivateNot only do the hens benefit from other systems but egg production and quality likely does too. I urge you to use suppliers who, at the very least, use "enriched" cages, free range farming with proper management would best.
2010-07-24Dolores DendyHowever, I do have one in Bucks County and I have always wanted to check it out, now I think I'll just forget it. Weather I shop there or not makes no difference to the Chickens that are treated so badly, would you want to be treated that way? They may be just chickens but they do many things that you do, breathe, love, play, enjoy the company of their friends, so think about that and please do what is best, so that they can at least enjoy their short time on this earth!

2010-06-18Ann PilcherJamesville, NYWegmans DewittI'm sad to learn that you deal with farms using such inhumane cages/methods. Even more important than being organic, is the necessity that I buy meat from folks that treat their animals with respect and without cruelty. I can't, with a clean conscience, consume or feed my family animals that have lived a miserable life in hideous conditions. Please reconsider your current position on this issue.

2010-05-04Katherine HoaglandRochester, NYWegmans PerintonWegmans has been ranked among the top "Ethical Companies" in America several times. However, in seemingly blatant opposition to a corporate stance on which so much time, energy, and money has been devoted to cultivating, battery caged hens are still sold in your stores. I am sure a poll of customers would reveal a public that would not mind spending a little extra to balance out any 'additional' costs associated with switching and/ or phase out to a supplier that does not condone this abhorrent practice. In addition, think of all the free publicity that Wegmans would receive as a result of being the first large grocer to take a stand.

2010-04-24nikki kvitkahbg., paWegmans Harrisburg WestHello, There are so many really great things about your store. But cruelty to animals is NOT one of them! PLEASE stop using those insideous and horriffic battery cages" on your chickens. Just because they lay the eggs that we eat, does not mean they have to live their short lives in constant pain from being cramped into those heinous cages with NO rooom, literally on TOP of each other! Mu God, have a LITTLE bit of humanity! I guarantee you, your customers will think much more of you. until then, I will not buy your eggs. OR chickens, and make sure none of my friends do either.
