Ask Wegmans to phase out battery cages!

Along with the Humane Society of the U.S. we're asking Danny Wegman to stop selling eggs from cruel “battery” cages. A company that claims to be an industry leader in animal welfare shouldn't be inflicting unnecessary cruelty. Other large grocery chains have already phased out battery-cage eggs. Why can't Wegmans?

Please add your voice: We'll print out your signatures and deliver them to Wegmans headquarters in Rochester, New York.

To: Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

As a Wegmans customer, I urge you to stop selling eggs from battery caged hens. Battery cages are simply too cruel for any socially responsible company to support. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

2009-07-01Cindy DeVoreVAWegmans Lake ManassasYour continued sale of eggs from battery caged hens is disgusting. I have 30 chickens of my own, and I know what type of living conditions they require just to be healthy. Until you STOP selling eggs from battery caged hens, I will STOP shopping at Wegmans. I will also tell all my family and friends not to shop your stores. The practice of battery caging is deplorable. This practice negates everything Wegmans supposedly stands for. You are nothing but liars.

2009-06-11Karen ChoateLakeview, ARI am pretty sure that we don't have a Wegmans in Arkansas. If we did, I would not shop there until, and only until, they adopt a better understanding of what their chickens are going through, stuck in cages with so many other chickens that they can barely move, spread their wings, etc. They are being forced to live in battery cages with dead chicken corpses from not adequately taking care of the chickens; they die of dehydration, malnutrition, diseases, etc. Even if I was not a vegan, I would not eat these chickens because of the terribly inhumane conditions and serious neglect of these living, breathing souls.
2009-06-08PrivateRochester, NYWegmans MarketplaceI use Wegmans as my grocery of choice, but I've had to stop buying my eggs there. I now get my eggs exclusively from the public market. You've lost my business, can you get it back?

2009-05-06Beatrice HeveranDalton, PAWegmans ScrantonMy husband and I and my mother-in-law all shop at Wegman's and, in particular, buy your so-called cage-free eggs because we care about the animals and our food. We are appalled by your firm's duplicity and will no longer shop there. Instead, we will shop at Weis. Further, we will advise all our friends and acquaintances of Wegman's practices. Sincerely, Beatrice Heveran, Esq.

2009-04-09Amy EngstromHenrietta, NYWegmans MarketplaceAll generations in my family have been shopping at Wegmans since it opened over 30 years ago. My grandma used to talk about how good a person that Danny Wegman is. Wegmans has organic products my family eats and at a reasonable price. I had no idea that you would allow chickens to live in such deplorable conditions. All 32 members of my family have decided that if you do not cease the sale of battered caged chickens we will take our shopping elsewhere. Please end this cruel inhumane treatment and do what it takes to upgrade the conditions of the chickens. In the end it will be worth it !!
