Ask Wegmans to phase out battery cages!

Along with the Humane Society of the U.S. we're asking Danny Wegman to stop selling eggs from cruel “battery” cages. A company that claims to be an industry leader in animal welfare shouldn't be inflicting unnecessary cruelty. Other large grocery chains have already phased out battery-cage eggs. Why can't Wegmans?

Please add your voice: We'll print out your signatures and deliver them to Wegmans headquarters in Rochester, New York.

To: Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

As a Wegmans customer, I urge you to stop selling eggs from battery caged hens. Battery cages are simply too cruel for any socially responsible company to support. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

2012-01-25Karen GalarzaHaymarket, VaWegmans Lake ManassasI love wegmans, but I have to rethink my grocery store. You are getting rich of the misery of these poor animals. You will have to answer for that and it is on your conscience. I hope you change, but I cannot shop at your store anymore.

2011-10-30PrivateGlenn Dale, MDPlease stop battery caged hens. All factory farms are cruel to the animals, bad for our environment (polluting our waters and land),and affecting the health and well being of children and adults. The true greatness of a nation is based on how we treat the people and the animals in our care.
2011-10-29Richard ShannahanLutherville, MDWegmans Hunt ValleyI was horrified to learn that your massive egg farm is not Certified Humane!!!! You have such wonderful stores, restaurant, and organic farm. It is the morally and ethically correct thing to do--make your egg farm Certified Humane, with free range chickens. Christians should not make life horrendous and cruel for any of God's creatures! Sincerely, Rich Shannahan
2011-10-15PrivateScottsville, NYWegmans Chili-PaulIm honestly disgusted at your practices. I have been a lover of Wegmans since I was born and when I learned of the cruelty you support at your egg farms it broke my heart. Please, you have the money and the man power to do what is right. Why aren't you?

2011-09-10Privatejacksonville, flWegmans FairfaxWe live in a society now that cruelity to animals is no longer acceptable and Wegman's should be ashammed at themselves for such cruelity to hens. We can get the same result by other non cruel ways. protect our livestock. I won't be shopping there anytime soon until they have corrected this problem ASAP!

2011-08-20Janice BourdageBethlehem, PAYour position and practices with regards to the care and feeding of your chickens and the eggs they produce is disturbing. I now shop at Wegman's only sporadically, and hope for a better, more humane alternative like Whole Foods. There is a movement afoot, in which people are insisting that their food be raised in humane, compassionate ways. As a businessman, you would do well to take this very seriously. Other stores are changing their policies and practices with regard to farm animals based on consumer demand. Why are you so far behind the times?
2011-08-01micheale huntNanticoke, paWegmans Wilkes-BarreI had no idea I was buying into cruelity. Shame on you guys for cashing in on an animals expense!!!
2011-07-25PrivateFrederick, MDWhile I appreciate your lower prices as well as your socially responsible policies and practices, I don't wish to benefit from or be party to any policies and practices that involve cruelty to animals. So as much as I enjoy shopping at your new store in Frederick, I won't buy eggs there--and am seriously considering boycotting the store/no longer shopping there (and encouraging friends, colleagues, and family members to do the same) as long as you continue to sell eggs from battery caged chickens. With sincere appreciation for the good things you do and hopes that you'll show your deep commitment to socially responsible policies and practices by taking care of this problem and inconsistency as soon as possible. 2011-07-01Theresa Cecchinirochester, nyWegmans East AveI have just learned of the conditions in which the chickens live in. I am a huge animal advocate, and although I have not yet become a full vegetarian, I refuse to consume animals, or their by-products when they have been treat so inhumanly. There is no reason for this, except for the selfishness of man. If people could only feel the pain these animals go through, maybe each one wold take a stand against the abuse. The production may be slower and cost higher, but each animal, including all farm animals should be respected and live a normal life, free to move, be in a clean environment, and free from all pain.
2011-04-21Privaterochester, nyWegmans Latta RdI come home from college especially to shop at your store! I did a project on how wegmans is not only the best place to work for, but also a company with conscious. Places like whole foods and trader joes will get my business and the business of my generation if this isn't addressed.
2011-04-15Leala FarnsworthWegmans JamestownI really thought your stores were better than this! I will no longer buy any animal products from Wegmans until this UGLY practice is done with!!!
2011-03-31Bob SledReston, VAWegmans DullesThis practice is reprehensible. I will never buy another egg or pouktry product from Wegmans.
2011-03-30mia wyattellicott city, mdWegmans Hunt Valleythere is a new wegmans being built about 3 miles from my house and i'd love to become a regular customer, but will not do so as long as the company continues to condone the abuse of chickens in their egg farms! there are more compassionate places to shop, and i will support them with my business until changes are made.
2011-03-24PrivateSyracuse, NYWegmans FairmountWegmans could make a significant difference here! Please stop carrying eggs from battery caged hens, it's a gross and cruel practice!
2011-03-16PrivatePITTSFORD, NYWegmans PittsfordI've always thought highly of Wegmans, but this makes me think twice about everything that has the Wegmans name on it. It's all around disturbing! I have stopped buying eggs at the store. I now have found a local farmer with better practices.
2011-03-03Beth BehaRochester, NYWegmans PittsfordWhen my family buys eggs, they do not buy from your stores. The atrocities the hens go through makes your eggs both unappealing - due to the stress it puts on them and in them and saddening - to think you actually don't care. I'd rather buy from someone who sacrifices money to do the right thing.
2011-02-28Margaret ColemanEast Syracuse, NYWegmans DewittI have always been proud of Wegmans as a store that is responsive to its customers and does business responsibly and fairly. But this investigation reveals shocking conditions on its egg farms and I hope Wegmans will be true to the image it portrays in producing "food that you feel good about." I don't feel good about the eggs and chickens!
