Come join us on a tour of the mysterious and wonderous innards of Rochester's own Soy Boy manufacturing plant. While Soylent Green may be made from people, Soy Boy products definitely aren't: they're totally vegan!

Low carb, High Carb, Vegetarian, Vegan, Carnivore... Sorting through the Diet Debates

Trying to lose weight? Unsure how to navigate food labels? Can't tell if your diet is meeting your nutritional needs? The recent popularity of the Atkins Diet and the large amount of misinformation surrounding high-protein diets in general is of grave concern to the dietetic community. Learn to understand the foods you eat and their impact on long-term health, and discover how Atkins can help you lose a lot more than weight.

About the speaker: George Eisman is considered one of the nation's foremost educators on vegetarian nutrition. He has served as a faculty member in Dietetics and Nutrition at several universities and colleges and created the first accredited program in Vegetarian Studies. He has worked in a children's hospital, a nursing home and for public health agencies in four states. Eisman has spoken at numerous events and conferences and is the author of two books, The Most Noble Diet (1994) and A Basic Course in Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition (2003).

Vegetarianism 101

Becoming vegetarian or vegan is easier than you think. Let Erik Marcus tell you how. Erik has been vegan for more than fifteen years, and is the author of two books on the subject, and he is also the publisher of Vegan.com. Attend this talk and you'll learn the ins and outs of how to change your diet easily and effortlessly.

About the speaker: Erik Marcus is one of America's leading writers about animal agriculture. He is the author of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating (1998), as well as the acclaimed new title, Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, and Money (2005). In addition to writing books, Erik publishes Vegan.com, a popular website devoted to animal protection and the vegan lifestyle. He also hosts Erik's Diner — a podcast talk show about food and farmed animals. A highly regarded public speaker, Mr. Marcus lives outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

You need only bring your appetite, but food is welcome, of course. Please make sure it contains no dairy, eggs or other animal byproducts so that everyone can enjoy it.

Trip: Farm Sanctuary

Cars leave from the ITS Center

Have you ever given a pig a belly-rub? Talked to a turkey? Kissed a cow?

Join us on a free trip to Farm Sanctuary, a 175-acre farm in Watkins Glen with hundreds of animals rescued from factory farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses. The animals are given the care and love needed to recover from a lifetime of abuse and neglect; they have nourishing food, spacious, clean barns, and acres of green, sunny pastures.

Both the tour and transportation are free. Cars leave from the ITS center (in back of Rush Rhees Library) at 11 a.m. and return by about 6 p.m.

We'll be heading to Ly-Lou's, a Phillipine restaurant in the South Wedge neighborhood that serves an array of inexpensive and delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes. Chef Teresa Giron makes every dish to order, and when possible, she's happy to customize ingredients upon request.

We'll be heading to the Eastman School to listen to a recital by our very own Abby Aresty. Titled I: an alternative listening experience, it addresses issues of animal exploitation and incorporates video footage from Farm Sanctuary, a shelter for rescued farm animals.
